Our neighbors a couple of doors down said Canela was their favorite Spanish restaurant in the city. They hosted us. They moved in after the pandemic. They said they had tried ten different similar places in the same category. It is their favorite cuisine. So they have a sense, it seems, and I am happy to trust them. We had entertained them, a couple and their teenage son, at a fancy Chinese restaurant earlier, to get acquainted. They reciprocated, which I do not expect but which I respect. We had everything you could have, though light on vegetables. They ordered bone marrow for everyone (my wife doesn't eat it; the kid had two). That was tasty. It came with micro greens on top. The Impossible meatballs were utterly convincing, indistinguishable from animal protein. I had always wanted to try king trumpet mushrooms prepared as scallops, and I was not disappointed -- it was an excellent, flavorful, umami rich facsimile, though probably people who liked the real thing would discern this was, while good, something else. All the dishes were competent and arrived speedily. We ate out fill and then some. They had a wine that was not listed, a dry red. Our neighbors are regular enough to be told about these specials. The atmosphere was festive but not raucous. Our server was attentive and diligent. I would return to Canela, except the parking there is not easy; we were very lucky, due to the earlier hour we were dining, and we found a spot across the street.

Thank you Mat for the incredible tapas and paella tasting! Incredible! Each course more delicious than the previous. Hospitality and service above and beyond! Location is absolutely gorgeous as we loved being on Market street in the beautiful Castro! We can't wait to return and eat our way through the entire menu! Thank you for the wonderful homecoming meal!

I dined at Canela with a friend last night, based on a recommendation from another friend. We loved the food, ambiance, lighting, comfort of the seating and the excellent service. The desserts were delicious as well. Great wine list and I really enjoyed the dry white I ordered. The complimentary fruit infused water was a nice touch. My friend is gluten free and there were plenty of gf options / modifications. Our kind server took the time to make sure my friend could order the menu items that would work for her. What I didn't love: the QR code menu. I try to ditch my phone for meals and I find QR menus annoying to read and impersonal. It's a huge downside and I wish restaurants would ditch QR menus post-Covid. In saying that, I would definitely recommend eating here for the great food and the really kind and friendly servers. We had a great time!
